Let's Listen on Summer Car Trips!

Summer means so many fun adventures - often car rides! Some families love to listen to audio books together and its a great way to bond - discuss difficult topics - laugh - learn - explore! When selecting the right books to enjoy, you have to consider who will be in the car. I recommend elementary and middle grade books for families with mixed ages. Normally they will be free of intense situations and keep the plot moving fast enough to keep you listening!

Here are some favorite audiobooks that your family the you might enjoy!

Fuzzy Mud by Louis Sachar - Upper Elementary/Middle School - great voices, addresses bullying, science, environment and big chemical companies/corporate responsibility

Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary - read by Stockard Channing (you might recall her from Grease) - she bring the warm clever Ramona to life - through the trials and tribulations of being 8! Family and finances are big concerns for Ramona's family in this book and could lead to some interesting discussions.

Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne - Your kids may be reading these in school and they are fun way to explore other cultures and history. None of the books are very long, so you can have fun listening to several books during the trip. Pope Osborne published non-fiction books to accompany many of these books, so kids can dive deeper into some of the interesting topics from the books.

Shadow Cipher by Laura Ruby - Upper Elementary/Middle School - The story begins in New York prior to 1800 with an unexpected Sci-Fi/Industrial twist and then quickly moves to modern day with more scientific inventions. A wide variety of characters and ideas are brought to life with an adventurous mystery to be solved.
